ETIAS Europe 2026 Guide: When It Starts, Cost, and How Koreans Apply

If you’re planning to visit certain countries in Europe soon,
you may not be able to travel with just your passport
onceETIAS,
a new pre-travel authorization system, officially rolls out.

Based on the current guidance,
it’s expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026,
but the exact start date
has not been officially announced yet.

So do Korean travelers need to apply too?
How much will it cost?
And when and how should you prepare before your trip?
Let’s break it all down step by step.

ETIAS
stands for the
European Travel Information and Authorisation System.

It’s an electronic travel authorization
that visa-free travelers to Europe
will need to apply for onlinebefore departure.

Think of it like applying for ESTA before a trip to the United States:
before traveling to countries covered by ETIAS,
you’ll enter your information online
and receive travel authorization in advance.

The important thing to know is this:
ETIAS is not a visa.

Korean passport holders who currently travel visa-free
for short trips to Europe
are not being switched over to a visa system.

It’s better to think of it as
one extra pre-approval step before travel.

Since South Korea is a visa-exempt country
for short stays in Europe,
once ETIAS goes into effect,
Korean travelers will need approval
before visiting participating countries.

Once approved,
you’ll be able to stay in ETIAS-participating countries
for up to 90 days within any 180-day period
for short-term travel.

2. ETIAS Start Date, Fee, and Validity

According to current official European Union guidance,
ETIAS is expected to begin operating
in the fourth quarter of 2026.

That said, the exact launch date is still undecided.

The European Union has also said
that the actual start date will be announced separatelya few months before implementation,
so that’s the timeline to watch.

If you’re planning a Europe trip
toward the end of 2026,
it’s a good idea to check one more time
before departure to see whether ETIAS is live.

Also, even if you see websites online
claiming to be ETIAS application sites,
the official application system is not open yet,
so there is absolutely no need to pay anyone in advance.

The ETIAS application fee is 20 euros.
It used to be widely reported as 7 euros,
but the fee has now been changedto 20 euros.

However,
applicants under 18
and over 70
are expected to be exempt from the fee.

The exact amount will vary with exchange rates,
but for Korean travelers, that’s roughly
about $22.

One more helpful point:
once you’re approved,
you won’t need to reapply for every single Europe trip.

ETIAS is generally
valid for up to 3 years,and
if your passport expires before that,
your ETIAS expires with it.

In other words, even if you still have time left on your 3-year ETIAS,
you’ll need to apply again if you get a new passport.
If you’re planning to renew or replace your passport,
don’t forget that part.

3. ETIAS Application Process and What You Need

Once ETIAS begins,
you’ll be able to apply through the official website or official mobile app.That’s
where the application will be handled.

In general, you’ll need
your passport,
a payment card,
and your personal information
to complete the process.

Since ETIAS is linked to your passport,
you’ll need to travel with the same passport
you used when applying.

According to European Union guidance,
your travel document generally must be
issued within the last 10 years
and still valid at the time of travel.

The application flow should be fairly simple:
online application → enter your information → pay the 20 euro fee
→ approval → Europe trip.
That’s the basic order to expect.

4. What to Check Before Your Europe Trip

Once ETIAS takes effect,
preparing for a Europe trip
won’t just mean packing your passport, flight, and hotel details—
you’ll also need to confirm your ETIAS approval.That part matters too.

Especially, rather than rushing to apply right before departure,
it’s safer to apply in advance
once your travel dates are confirmed.

And when you apply for ETIAS,
use only the official website or official app.

If the system hasn’t even launched yet
and a third-party site asks you to pay first,
there’s really no reason to use it.
