2. What kind of event is the Yeosu World Island Expo?

As you can tell from this year’s theme,
“Connecting Islands, Seas, and the Future,”this isn’t just an event
that shows off pretty island scenery.
It goes much deeper than that.
Through exhibitions and hands-on experiences, it explores island nature and ecology,
local life and culture,
and even what the islands of the future might look like.

It’s really about the coexistence of islands and the sea,
and in the middle of the climate crisis,
it gives you a chance to think again about the value islands hold.
It’s also especially meaningful because it’s the world’s first
international event centered entirely on the theme of islands.
The overall venue size
is about 184,000 square meters, or roughly 55,000 pyeong, so
it’s much bigger than you might expect.
3. Venue layout, scale, and top things to see at the Yeosu World Island Expo

Once I stepped into the main Jimo District venue,
I was honestly surprised by how spacious it felt.
The grounds are divided into
Theme Island, Treasure Island, Marine Ecology Island, Future Island, Culture Island, International Exchange Island,
and Restaurant & Market Island.
That’s how the whole site is organized.

The very first thing that catches your eye at the entrance
is the massive media art installation at Theme Island.
It’s visually striking right away,
and it uses video to bring the island’s past, present, and futureto life
in a really immersive way.

Next up, Treasure Island
is a must if you’re visiting with kids.
It’s not just a look-and-leave kind of exhibit—
there are interactive activities
like slides and sand play,
so I saw a lot of families spending time there.

Marine Ecology Islandfocuses on environmental themes.
It’s where you can learn more about
the sea life living around the islands,
the marine environment, and even the issue of ocean waste,
all while showing how deeply islands and the sea
are connected.

Future Island and Culture Island
also have a totally different kind of appeal.
From future transportation and technology to MapleStory,
things that usually feel like imagination
suddenly show up in real life, which made it weirdly fun and familiar.

There’s also an outdoor area
designed to represent islands from Korea and around the world,
and once the lights come on in the evening,
the whole mood changes completely from daytime.
So if your schedule allows,
I’d recommend entering in the afternoon,
seeing the exhibitions first,
and then staying through sunset into the night views.

There are food trucks scattered throughout the venue too,
and at Restaurant Island you’ll find a wide range of things to eat,
so it’s easy to take care of a meal without leaving the expo.
According to the official schedule, it’s not just exhibitions—
performances and outdoor programs run continuously as well,
so before your visit,
it’s a good idea to check what’s happening on your date.

4. My honest Yeosu World Island Expo review

To be honest, when I first heard “island expo,”
I expected something a little quiet and exhibition-heavy.
But after walking around in person,
from the media art and kids’ activity zones
to island culture, marine ecology, future technology,
outdoor displays, and live performances,
there was way more to see than I expected.
The venue is large enough that even if you only focus on the main exhibits,
you should still set asideat least two hours.

If you’re visiting with kids and doing the hands-on activities,
then adding a show, dinner, and the night views,
half a day would be a very reasonable plan.
Personally, the highlights for me were
the Theme Island media art, Treasure Island, Culture Island, and the nighttime outdoor exhibits.
Those were the parts that really stuck with me.

If you’re planning a visit,
I’d recommend checking ticket prices online first
instead of just buying on-site,
especially to see whether any discounted rates are available.
If you’re going as a family,
even a small price difference per person
can add up more than you’d think.
Once you know your date,
compare the family pass first.

if you’re planning a fall trip to Yeosu,

you should absolutely add to your Yeosu itinerary this year.
