Jinan Travel Guide: Top Sights & Routes in Shandong, China

Hi, and welcome to my Jinan travel guide!
Ready for another adventure?
I’m Sseoz, your travel blogger and companion.

Have you ever heard of Jinan (济南), also known as Je-nam in Korean?
If not, let me introduce you.

It’s the capital of Shandong Province, China,
and its nickname is the “City of Springs”—for good reason!

Natural springs bubble up right in the city center,
and old alleyways follow their flowing waterways.
How could I resist?

Better yet, from Incheon, South Korea, the flight takes less than two hours,
and eligible travelers can currently visit visa-free,making it easy to plan a quick escape.
Add just one vacation day to a weekend, and you’re set!

So, for anyone visiting Jinan for the first time,
I’ve rounded up the main attractions, their locations, and practical walking routes
in one handy place.

1. Jinan Travel Guide: Direct Flights, Visa-Free Entry & Time Difference

Let’s start with the essentials.

Flight time

Incheon → Jinan nonstop About 1 hour 50 minutes

Direct flights

Up to five Shandong Airlines flights daily

From the winter schedule starting October 25

Time difference

One hour behind South Korea

Visa

Visa-free stays of up to 30 days for eligible passport holders, including South Koreans

Through December 31, 2026, under the current announcement

Airport → city center

About 40 minutes to 1 hour by taxi or DiDi

There were four things
that really drew me to Jinan.

Springs are everywhere
They flow through parks, narrow neighborhood channels,
and the moat tracing the old city walls.

The main attractions are clustered downtown
Most major sights connect easily on foot,
so there’s hardly any need to keep changing subway lines.

Springs by day, lakeside lights by night
Spend the day exploring spring-fed parks and old alleyways,
then finish with Daming Lake’s nighttime scenery.

It’s a great base for day trips
Mount Tai is within reach with a 30–40-minute high-speed train ride,
while Mingshui Ancient Town, a water town, is about an hour away by car.

Under the current announcement, visa-free entry runs
through December 31, 2026.

An extension into 2027 has not yet been announced,
so if you’re traveling around New Year’s,
book flights and accommodations with cancellation optionsto give yourself some flexibility.

Take the 8:45 a.m. flight from Incheon,
and you’ll arrive around 9:30 a.m. local time.
That leaves you almost a full day
to explore right from the start—a pretty great deal.

2. Jinan Travel Guide Map: A Walkable One-Day Downtown Route

This is what makes exploring Jinan so easy:

its main attractions sit close together
in the old city center.

The city moat, or Hucheng River (护城河), follows the former city walls
in a roughly rectangular loop.
The spring parks, historic alleyways, and lake
are all inside that loop or right beside it.

Route

Walking time

Baotu Spring → Five Dragon Pool

About 5 minutes

Baotu Spring → Quancheng Square → Black Tiger Spring, following the moat-side path

About 30 minutes

Black Tiger Spring → Kuanhouli → Furong Street

About 15 minutes

Furong Street → Qushuiting Street → Daming Lake

About 10 minutes

If you enjoy walking,
you can cover most of the main downtown sights in a day.

Follow the red dotted line on the map,
and the full loop is about 5 kilometers, or 3.1 miles.
Walking alone takes roughly 1½ hours.

Add sightseeing, food stops, and breaks,
and a relaxed half day to a full day is just right.

Only two attractions are a little farther out:

Thousand Buddha MountainSouth of the old town, about 10–15 minutes by taxi
Shandong MuseumAbout 10 kilometers east, or 20–30 minutes by taxi

For accommodations, I recommend the stretch between Baotu Spring and Daming Lake,
right in the old town. It’s a wonderfully convenient base.

You can step outside for a stroll first thing in the morning or after dinner.

3. Best Jinan Attractions: Baotu Spring, Daming Lake & Thousand Buddha Mountain

Baotu Spring (趵突泉): Admission & Opening Hours

If you visit just one spring in Jinan, make it this one.

Right in the middle of the pool, three jets of spring water
bubble up together, constantly breaking the surface.

The Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty is said to have named it
the “Number One Spring Under Heaven.”

Even in photos, the water looks incredibly clear.

Admission

Adults: CNY 40 Students and ages 6–18: CNY 20

Opening hours

Opens at 7 a.m.

Closing times vary by season

Tickets

On-site ticket office, Trip.com, or Meituan

Time to allow

1–1½ hours

Within the grounds, Wanzhu Garden (万竹园)
is included in the same admission ticket,so there’s no extra charge to explore it.

The crowds thin out considerably here, making it a lovely spot for quieter photos.

Five Dragon Pool (五龙潭): A Free Spring Park in Jinan

This park is just north of Baotu Spring.
The water is so clear you can watch the fish swimming below,
and admission is free, making it an easy stop on a leisurely walk.
Opening hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Black Tiger Spring (黑虎泉): A Local Favorite in Jinan

From Baotu Spring, follow the moat
east until you reach Black Tiger Spring.

Three carved tiger heads
send powerful streams of water pouring into the pool.
This is another sight you can visit for free.

Try to come in the morning.
Older residents arrive carrying water containers
to collect fresh spring water—a little everyday ritual
that feels unmistakably Jinan.

On winter mornings,
wisps of steam rise from the water, making it even more atmospheric.

Daming Lake (大明湖): Chaoran Tower Night Views & Lighting Time

This large lake collects water flowing from the city’s springs.
Walking around the lakeshore is free,so you can linger without worrying about admission fees.

By day, stroll along the willow-lined paths
or take a sightseeing boat ride around the lake.
But there’s one thing you really shouldn’t miss at Daming Lake:

the spectacular nighttime view of Chaoran Tower (超然楼).It’s a highlight!
After sunset, the tower’s lights switch on all at once,
a moment that has become a huge hit on social media.

The lights usually come on around 7 p.m.,so plan your visit accordingly
and arrive a little early for a good viewing spot.

Food Streets & Historic Lanes: Furong Street, Qushuiting Street & Kuanhouli

Between Baotu Spring and Daming Lake,
a network of old lanes connects the sights.

Furong Street (芙蓉街)Jinan’s signature food street.
Expect stall after stall selling skewers, desserts, and street snacks.

Qushuiting Street (曲水亭街)Spring-fed channels flow right past the houses.
This is my pick for the prettiest photos.

Kuanhouli (宽厚里)A spacious, tidy pedestrian area that’s convenient for dinner.

The lanes twist and turn, so you’ll probably keep checking your map app.
Remember that KakaoTalk, Instagram, and Google generally aren’t directly accessible on mainland Chinese networks.
Come prepared with a China eSIM that supports access to your usual Korean appswithout extra setup.

Thousand Buddha Mountain (千佛山): Admission, Cable Car & Free-Entry Tip

This mountain stands south of the old town,
and, true to its name, Buddha figures are carved into cliffs throughout the grounds.

From the top, you can take in Jinan’s skyline and Daming Lake in one sweeping view.

Admission

About CNY 30, with slightly cheaper tickets available online

Insider tip

Entry before 6:30 a.m. is free!

Time to allow

2–3 hours

If you’re worried about tiring out your legs, take the cable car for an easier ascent.
I recommend riding up
and walking down so you can stop to see the Buddha carvings.

Shandong Museum: Reservations & Weekly Closure

This is one of China’s larger museums.

Admission is free, but there’s one important catch: reservations are required, and it’s closed on Mondays.Keep that in mind when planning your visit.
It’s a perfect option to save for a rainy day.

4. Jinan Day Trips: Getting to Mingshui Ancient Town & Mount Tai

A day is enough to cover the main downtown sights,
so if you have another day, head out of the city.

These nearby destinations offer a completely different atmosphere.

Mingshui Ancient Town (明水古城): Admission & Getting There

This historic-style town lies east of central Jinan, in Zhangqiu District (章丘),within Jinan, Shandong Province, China.

Spring water runs between the buildings,
linking stone bridges, canals, and traditional architecture
in a scene reminiscent of Jiangnan’s water townsin eastern China.

It was designed by the team behind
Wuzhen (乌镇), the famous water town near Shanghai, which explains
its nickname, the “Wuzhen of Shandong.”

Location

About 1 hour east of downtown Jinan by car

Jinan Railway Station → Zhangqiu Railway Station: about 25 minutes

Admission

Adults: CNY 98; discounted tickets are available online

Opening hours

9 a.m.–10 p.m.

My recommendation

Arrive in the afternoon and stay for the nighttime illuminations.

How to Get from Jinan to Mount Tai
High-Speed Trains to Tai’an & the Mount Tai Cable Car

From Jinan, a high-speed train gets you
to Tai’an (泰安) in 30–40 minutes. It’s an easy starting point for the trip.

Here you’ll find the mountain traditionally regarded
as the foremost of China’s Five Great Mountains: Mount Tai,also known as Taishan.

In winter, the summit drops well below freezing, with strong winds adding to the chill.

If you visit in December or January, bring a down jacket,
gloves, and hand warmers.

Mingshui Ancient Town

Mount Tai

Getting there

25 minutes by train

30–40 minutes by high-speed train, followed by a bus

Atmosphere

Canals, stone bridges, and nighttime illuminations

Mountain scenery, sunrise views, and hiking

Best for

Photography lovers and fans of nighttime scenery

Walkers and hikers

Time to allow

A full day

Q. How many days do you need in Jinan?
A. Two days and one night are enough for the main city sights.
For nearby day trips too, I recommend three days and two nights.

Q. Can I visit Jinan visa-free?
A. Yes, if you hold an eligible passport. Under the current announcement,
the policy runs through December 31, 2026,
and allows visa-free stays of up to 30 days.
Be sure to check whether it has been extended before planning a 2027 trip.

Q. Is it really easy to explore on foot?
A. Most places within the old town are about 10–30 minutes apart on foot.
You’ll only need a taxi for Thousand Buddha Mountain and Shandong Museum.
Follow the spring-fed waterways, and it’s easy to lose track of time—
that’s the Jinan I wanted to share in this Jinan travel guide.

It’s hard to believe a place with this atmosphere is only a two-hour flight from Incheon.
If you’re eligible, make the most of the visa-free window and plan a visit!
